2、influenceothermembersofonlinecommunitiesintriggeringmessagereplies,sparkingconversation,anddiffusinglanguage.Itrelieson632,622messagesfrom33,450participantsacross16discussiongroupsfromGoogleGroupsthattookplaceovera2-yearperiod.Itutilizesautomatedtextanalysis,socialnetworkanalysis,
3、andhierarchicallinearmodelingtouncoverthelanguageandsocialbehaviorofonlineleaders.Thefindingsshowthatonlineleadersinfluenceothersthroughhighcommunicationactivity,credibility,networkcentrality,andtheuseofaffective,assertive,andlinguisticdiversityintheironlinemessages.doi:10.1111/j.1

5、suchaselec-tronicmailinglists,chatrooms,andmultiuserdungeons(Baym,2000;Rheingold,2000;Turkle,1995)andmorerecentlymanifestthroughsocialnetworkingservicessuchasFacebookorMySpace,content-sharingWebsitessuchasYouTubeorFlickr,onlinediscussiongroupssuchasGoogleGroups,andavarietyofmessa
6、geboards.Evenblogs,inundatedwithcommentsfromloyalreadersorfirst-timeviewers,representathrivingandinfluentialonlinecommunity.Themembersoftheseonlinegroupscreateandshareinformationatanunprece-dentedlevel,resultinginmillionsofmessages,photos,orvideos,butmoreimportantlyopinions,ideas,a
7、ndafingeronthepulseoftheneedsandbeliefsofthemassiveaudiencethatmakesuptheInternet.Althoughthestudyofonlinediscussiongroupsbecameanearlyfocalpointforresearchers(Sudweeks,McLaughlin,&Rafaeli,1998),weknowlittleaboutcharacteristicsofindividualuserswhosparkcommunicationorinfluenceitscon
