3、CHAPTERONEAFrameworkFordesignInthepasttwodecades,researchapproacheshavemultipliedtoapointatwhichinvestigatoryorinquireshavemanychoices.Forthosedesigningaproposalorplan,Irecommendthatageneralframeworkbeadoptedtoprovideguidanceaboutallfacetsofthestudy,fromassessingthegeneralphiloso
4、phicalideasbeingtheinquirytothedetaileddatacollectionandanalysisprocedures.Usinganextantframeworkalsoallowsresearcherstolodgetheirplansinideaswellgroupedintheliteratureandrecognizedbyaudiences(e.g.,facultycommittee)thatreadandsupportproposalsforresearch.Whatframeworksexistfordesi
5、gningaproposal.Althoughdifferenttypesandtermsaboundintheliterature,Iwillfocusonthree:quantitative,qualitative,andmixedmethodsapproaches.Thefirsthasbeenavailabletothesocialandhumanscientistforyears,thesecondhasemergedprimarilyduringthelastthreeorfourdecades,andthelastsisnewandstil
6、ldevelopinginformandsubstance.Thischapterintroducesthereaderothethreeapproachestoresearch,Isuggestthattounderstandthem,theproposaldeveloperneedstoconsiderthreeframeworkelements:philosophicalassumptionsaboutwhatconstitutesknowledgeclaims;generalproceduresofresearchcalledstrategies
