1、CProjectDescriptionWeproposecreatingtwoverydifferentintroductorycomputersciencecoursesbyadapting,intwodifferentways,GeorgiaTech’snewCS1315,IntroductiontoMediaComputing,(henceforthsimply“CS1315”)[12,13,27].Multimediawillbeaunifyingthemeforbothcourses.Thecourseaimeda

2、tnon-CSmajorswillbewhatComputingCurricula2001[24]describesas“ageneralfluency”course,onethat“satisfiesgeneralstudentinterestsincomputing”and“helpsproducemoreinformedcitizenswithrespecttoinformationtechnology.”Thesecondcoursewillbeagentleintroductiontocomputersciencewi

3、thprogrammingfortheroughly50–70%ofincomingUICCSmajorswhohavelittleprogrammingexperience.Ourintentionistoleveltheplayingfieldforstudentsinthesubsequentcourse,anaggressively-pacedtraditionalCS1course.C.1GoalsandObjectivesThetwoproposedcourseshavesomeindependentandsome

4、sharedgoals.Animportantsharedgoalisengagingandexcitingthestudentsinthecourses.WeconcurwithGuzdial’sargumentthatmultimediaisasuperlativevehicleforengagingandexcitingtoday’scollegestudents.[13].Asecondsharedgoalistoattractadiversebodyofstudentstocomputing:womenalongw

5、ithmen,allraces,anddiverseeconomicbackgrounds.Minoritiesnowcomprise50%ofUICundergraduates(upfrom41%in1997).Internationalstudiesofprogrammingperformance[18],decliningretentionrates[11],andstu-dentfailureratesashighas50%[25]showthatcomputersciencedepartmentstodayaren

6、otsuc-cessfullyattractingawiderangeofstudentstointroductoryCS,norfullyengagingthosestudentswhodoenrollinsuchcourses.Meanwhile,theneedforITprofessionalskeepsgrowing[9].IntroductoryCSclassesarealsonotmeetingtheneedsofmanywomen,astheenrollmentofwomeninsuchclasseskeeps

7、falling(see,e.g.,[5,16,17]).WomenreportedlytendtoavoidCS(andITingeneral)inpartbecausetheyfindCScourses“tooboring”and“overlytechnical,”withC-1littleroomforcreative“tinkering”[1,17].AtasessiondevotedtoincreasingtheenrollmentofwomenatarecentACMSIGCSEconference,speakers

8、reportedthatwomenCSmajorswereoftensurprisedbyhowmuch“creativity”therewasinlaterCScourses,sinceintroductorycoursesdidnothighlightthisaspectofCS[23
