3、ckssubjectedtoonlyuniaxialcompressiveloading.Jointedmodelmaterialblocksexhibiteddifferentfailuremodesdependingonthejointconfigurations.Orientationofthejointsetsplayedasignificantrolerelatedtothemodesoffailure.Itwaspossibletoobtainastrongnon-linearrelationb

4、etweenthejointedmodelmassstrengthandthefracturetensorcomponenttocoverthestrengthsresultingfromallthedifferentfailuremodesobservedintheinvestigation.Thefracturetensorcomponentwasusedtoobtainthecombinedeffectofnumberofjointsets,jointdensity,anddistributionso

7、irgeometricalparameters,andtheuncertaintiesinvolvedintheestimationoftheirgeomechanicalandgeometricalpropertiesmakeitcomplicatedanddifficulttoaccuratelypredictthemechanicalpropertiesofjointedrockmasses.Somein-situtestshavebeencarriedouttostudytheeffectofsiz

8、eonrockmasscompressivestrength(Bieniawski1968;Prattetal.1972;Bieniawski,VanHeerden1975).Heuze1980hasreviewedthepreviousworkonscaleeffectsonmassstrength.Theresultsoftheseinvestigationsclearlyshowthereductionof
