4、thethatthereissomethingthatcomputersandbrainsdo,butwhichotherobjects,betheyrocks,trees,orbicycles,donot.Thereareseveralcandidatesforwhatthatcommonalitybetweenbrainsandcomputersis:theyprocessinformation,theyrepresent,theycompute.Itishopedthatbyfindingsimilaritiesbetweencomputersandbrains,wemi
5、ghtbeabletousethetechniquesofcomputersciencetohelpusdemystifythementalactivitythatthebrainsupports.However,leavingthepostulatedsimilaritiesatsuchanabstractlevelmaylimittheproductivityofthisapproach.Afternotingtheconnections,ifany,betweenwhatbrainsdoandwhatcomputersingeneraldo,itseemsagoodide
6、atolookformorespecificconnectionsbetweenhumancognitionandtheactivityofparticularkindsofcomputers,computersthatshareatleastsomeofthepurposesandfunctionsofthebrain.Recenttrendsincognitivesciencesuggestthatwehavealreadycomeclosetoexhaustingtheinsightsthatcanbegainedfromcomparinghumancognitionto
7、theactivityofdisembodied,formalcomputationalsystemssuchastheoremproversandexpertsystems.Inparticular,itseemswisetoenrichthestudyofhumancognitionwithanemphasisoncomputersthatcontrolrobotswhichperceiveandactinareal-time,real-spaceenvironment.Indeed,t
