4、llabus.Theimplicationwasthatsometextsweresomehowself-evidentintheirmeaningandintent,andtherefore“simple,”whileother,seeminglymorecomplicatedtexts,demandedandthereforedeservedclosescrutiny;forexample,whatcanyousayaboutanovelassupposedlystraightforwardanduncomplicatedasUncleTom’sCabin

5、?Buttheambiguous,self-referentialBenitoCerenoprovidesplentyofmaterialforclassdiscussion.Asmanyinstructorswilltestify,however,classroomexperienceoftentellsadifferentstory,wherefewifanynineteenth-centurytexts,nomatterhowsupposedly“simple”or“straightforward,”areexperiencedasself-eviden
