3、ndChildWellbeingStudy,toinvestigatethelinksbetweenHeadStartandschoolreadinessinalargeanddiversesampleofurbanchildrenatage5(N=2,803;18cities).WefoundthatHeadStartattendancewasassociatedwithenhancedcognitiveabilityandsocialcompetenceandreducedattentionproblemsbutnotreducedinternalizingorexternaliz
4、ingbehaviorproblems.Thesefindingswererobusttomodelspecifications(includingmodelswithcity-fixedeffectsandpropensity-scoringmatching).Furthermore,theeffectsofHeadStartvariedbythereferencegroup.HeadStartwasassociatedwithimprovedcognitivedevelopmentwhencomparedwithparentalcareorothernonparentalcare,
5、aswellasimprovedsocialcompetence(comparedwithparentalcare)andreducedattentionproblems(comparedwithothernonparentalcare).Incontrast,comparedwithattendanceatpre-kindergartenorothercenter-basedcare,HeadStartattendancewasnotassociatedwithcognitivegainsbutwithimprovedsocialcompetenceandreducedattenti
