3、Allrightsreserved.1.IntroductionInrecentyears,vehicleswithinternalcombustionengineshaveincreasinglyplayedanimportantroleasameansoftransportation,andarecontributingmuchtothedevelopmentofsociety.However,vehicleemissionscontributetoairpollutionandpossiblyevenglobalwarming,
4、whichrequireeffectivecountermeasures.Variousdevelopmentsarebeingmadetoreducetheseemissions,butnofurtherlargeimprovementscanbeexpectedfrommerelyimprovingthecurrentenginesandtransmissions.Thus,greatexpectationsarebeingplacedonthedevelopmentofelectric,hybridandnaturalgas-d
5、rivenvehicles.Judgingfromcurrentlyapplicabletechnologies,andthecurrentlyinstalledinfrastructureofgasolinestations,inspectionandservicefacilities,thehybridvehicle,drivenbythecombinationofgasolineengineandelectricmotor,isconsideredtobeoneofthemostrealisticsolutions.Genera
6、llyspeaking,hybridsystemsareclassifiedasseriesorparallelsystems.AtToyota,wehavedevelopedtheToyotaHybridSystem(hereinafterreferredtoastheTHS)bycombiningtheadvantagesofbothsystems.InthissensetheTHScouldbeclassifiedasaparallel-seriestypeofsystem.SincetheTHSconstantlyoptimi
7、zesengineoperation,emissionsarecleanerandbetterfueleconomycanbeachieved.Duringbraking,Kineticenergyisrecoveredbythemotor,therebyreducingfuelconsumptionandsubsequentCO2emissions.EmissionsandfueleconomyaregreatlyimprovedbyusingtheTHSforthepowertrainsystem.However,theTHSin
