2、ence+BusinessMedia,LLC.2009AbstractThereismuchinterestamongculturaleconomistsinassessingtheeffectsofheritagepreservationpolicies.Therehasbeenlessinterestinmodelingthepolicychoicesmadeinhistoricandculturallandmarkpreservation.Thisarticlebuildsaneconomicmodelofala
3、ndmarkdesignationthathighlightsthetensionsbetweentheinterestsofownersofculturalamenitiesandtheinterestsoftheneighboringcommunity.WeperformempiricaltestsbyestimatingadiscretechoicemodelforlandmarkpreservationusingdatafromChicago,combiningtheChicagoHistoricalResou
4、rcesSurveyofover17,000historicstructureswithpropertysales,Census,andothergeographicdata.Thedataallowustoexplainwhysomeprop-ertiesweredesignatedlandmarks(orlandmarkdistricts)andotherswerenot.Theresultsidentifytheinfluenceofpropertycharacteristics,localsocio-econom
