2、deofthe“lineofactualcontrol”(LAC)thatseparatesLadakhinitsstateofJammu&KashmirfromChina,intheabsenceofanagreedborder.JapanreportsthatChinesemaritimesurveillancevesselsareeverydaycirclingthedisputedSenkakuorDiaoyuislandsintheEastChinaSea.AndonApril26thChinademandedthatthePhil
3、ippines“withdrawallitsnationalsandfacilities”fromanumberofislandsandreefsintheSouthChinaSea,wheretheyhavebeen,insomecases,fordecades.InallthesecasesChinacanwithsomejustificationclaimitisrespondingtoprovocation.That,however,isscantcomforttoitsincreasinglyanxiousneighbours.Of
4、thethreeterritorialdisputesitistherekindlingoftheonewithIndiathatcomesmostasasurprise.Twolongsectorsoftheborderarecontested.Intheeast,ChinabrieflyoccupiedpartofwhatisnowthestateofArunachalPradesh,southofTibet,inabloodypunitivewarin1962.Inthewest,theAksaiChin,ahighplateauthe
5、sizeofSwitzerland,isoccupiedbyChinabutclaimedbyIndiaaspartofLadakh.Inbothsectors,patrolsfromeachsideoftenstrayintowhattheotherseesasitsterritory.Theydonot,however,pitchtents,asChina’ssoldiershaveinthisincursion.Itisthemostseriousconfrontationoneitherendofthebordersince1986.
6、Afterthatstand-off,thetwocountriesagreedtosetthequarreltooneside,inanendlessnegotiationonthedemarcationoftheLAC,astheyconcentratedonbuildingtradeandotherties.Adriveadecadeagotoreachapoliticalsettlementsoonranintothesand.Butneithersidehasaninterestinforcingtheissue.Nowabovea
7、ll,whenChinaisembroiledintheotherdisputes,andtheregionistensebecauseofNorthKorea’serraticbellicosity,itseemsincomprehensiblethatChinashouldwanttoresurrectyetanothersquabble.Chinaofcoursedeniesithasdoneanythingofthekind,insistingitssoldiersareonitssideoftheLAC.Itmay,however,
