2、versityofVirginiaCharlottesville,VA22903AbstractRecentworkondifferentiatedservicesintheInternethasdefinednewnotionsofQualityofService(QoS)thatapplytoaggregatesoftrafficinnetworkswithcoarsespatialgranularity.Mostproposalsfordifferentiatedservicesinvolvetrafficcon
3、trolalgorithmsforaggregateservicelevels,packetmarkingandpolicing,andpreferentialtreatmentofmarkedpacketsinthenetworkcore.TheissueofroutingforenhancingaggregateQoShasnotreceivedalotofattention.Thisstudyinvestigatesthepotentialbenefitofusingalternateroutingstrat
4、egiesinsupportofdifferentiatedservices.Weproposeatrafficcontrolscheme,calledSimpleAlternateRouting,whereinportionsofunmarkedpacketflowscanbeassignedtoalternatepathsthroughaServiceProviderNetwork(SPN)inresponsetocongestionfeedbackinformation.Theschemeissimple,re
5、quiringonlyminorchangestotheSPNborderrouterssothatalternatelyroutedpacketscanbetunneledviaconventionalpathstoanintermediatebordernodeandthentunneledfromtheretotheoriginalegressbordernode.Wepresentdistributedalgorithmsfor(1)discoveringcongestionwithintheSPN,an
6、d(2)allocatingtraffictoalternatepathsthatareuncongested.Wehaveimplementedtheschemeinapacket-levelsimulation,andwehaveexaminedthetransientresponseofthealgorithmtoperturbationsinthenominaltrafficlevelsexperiencedbytheSPN.Theexperimentalstudyofthispaperprovidessom
