2、orksandinteractivemulti-mediaworkstations,theIRI(InteractiveRemoteInstruction)Systemcreatesageographicallydispersedvirtualclassroom.Eachstudentparticipatesusingapersonalworkstationwhichcanbeusedtoviewmulti-mediaclasspresentations,tomakepresentations,totakenotesinamulti-med
3、ianotebook,andtointeractviaaudio/videoandsharedcomputertools.Wecomparethisapproachwithothermodesofinstructionanddescribelessonslearnedfromtheinstructor,studentandtechnicalperspectives.1IntroductionOverthepastseveralyears,researchersintheComputerScienceDepart-mentatOldDomin
4、ionUniversityhavedevelopedtheInteractiveRemoteInstruction(IRI)system.IRIprovidesavirtualclassroombyprovidingeachstudentamultimediaworkstationwithgroupcollaborationtechnology.IRIsupportsinteractivehands-onapprenticeships,multimedianote-takingandVCR-typereplayingofclasses(in
5、cludingimages,notes,andrelatedevents).Assistanceisprovidedtoinstructorsinthepreparationandpresentationof1instructionalmaterialsandintheorchestrationandmanagementofanin-teractiveclassroom.Thepaperisorganizedintoadescriptionofsystemarchitecture,researchissuesindistancelearni
6、ngandinteractiveinstructionalsystems,andaninitialevaluationoftheutilityandperformanceofthecurrentimplementationofIRI.2SystemStructureIRIisbeingimplementedtosupporta2+2"approachtoearningabac-calaureatedegreeinwhichastudentreceivesanassociatedegreefromacommunitycollegeandth
7、en nishesthelasttwoyearsatthatcommunitycollegeoveraremoteinstructiondeliverysystem.OldDominionUniversityhasamassedconsiderableexperienceinthisareathroughTELETECHNET,aremoteinstructionsystemwhichconnectsthemaincampusinNorfolk,VAtoseveralsatellitecampuses,23(by1997)community
