1、AbstractPassivesentenceisaveryimportantgrammaticalstructure.Englishpassivesentencesarewidelyusedinverbalcommunicationduetotheirparticulartextualandpragmaticfunctions.ManyscholarshaveconcentratedonthecomparativestudyofChineseandEnglishpassivestructures.However,SystemicFunctionalGrammarconsidersth
2、atchoosingpassiveoractivesentenceinadiscoursewillbringdifferenttextualfunctions.Asisknowntoall,withscienceandtechnologybeingwidelyattachedimportanceto,EnglishforScienceandTechnologyisplayinganincreasinglysalientrole.OneofthemainfeaturesofEnglishforScienceandTechnologyisthewidelyusedpassivesenten
3、ces.Hence,basedonthepreviousstudy,thisthesisanalyzesthepassivesentencesinEnglishforScienceandTechnologyfromtheperspectiveofFunctionalGrammar.ItisexpectedthatpeoplecanunderstandandwriteEnglishforScienceandTechnologybetter.Moreover,thethesishopestoinspireteachingandtranslation.Atthesametime,thisth
4、esisencouragespeopletolearnlanguagewithfunctionssothattheircommunicativecompetencewillbeimproved.ThethesisselectstwelvearticlesfromtheauthoritativemagazineSciencerandomly.Thenthepassivesentencesofthearticlesareanalyzedfromtheperspectiveofoneofthethreemeta-functionsoflanguage,i.e.textualfunction.
5、Throughthequalitativeanalysis,threeresearchquestionsareanswered.ThestudyfindsthatthetextualfunctionsofthepassivesentencesinEnglishforiiScienceandTechnologyaretopic-settingfunction,topic-highlightingfunctionandtextualcohesionandcoherencefunctionbasedonthematicstructure.Basedoninformationstructure
