4、angzhouwasPanyu(蕃禺,latersimplifedto番禺;thelocalspronouncedthisinCantoneseasPoonYu)foundedin214BC.Thecityhasbeencontinuouslyoccupiedsincethattime.PanyuwasexpandedwhenitbecamethecapitaloftheNanyueKingdom(南越)in206BC.Recentarchaeologicalfoundingofherpalacesuggeststhatthecitymighthavetradedfr
5、equentlywithforeignersbythesearoutes.The25foreigntradecontinuedthrougheveryfollowingdynastyandthecityremainsamajorinternationaltradingporttothisday.TheHanDynastyannexedNanyuein111BC,andPanyubecameaprovincialcapitalandremainssountilthisday.In226AD,thecitybecametheseatoftheGuangPrefecture
6、(廣州;Guangzhou).Therefore,'Guangzhou'wasthenameoftheprefecture,notofthecity.However,peoplegrewaccustomedtocallingthecityGuangzhou,insteadofPanyu.AlthoughtheChinesenameofGuangzhoureplacedPanyuasthenameofthewalledcity,PanyuwasstillthenameoftheareasurroundingthewalledcityuntiltheendofQinger
7、a.ArabsandPersianssackedGuangzhou(knowntothemasSin-Kalan)inAD758,2accordingtoalocalGuangzhougovernmentreportonOctober30,758,whichcorrespondedtothedayofGuisi(癸巳)oftheninthlunarmonthinthefirstyearoftheQianyuaneraofEmperorSuzongoftheTangDynasty.[1][2][3]DuringtheNorthernSongDynast
