4、ngzhouHistory.fromgoogleearthItisbelievedthatthefirstcitybuiltatthesiteofGuangzhouwasPanyu(蕃禺,latersimplifedto番禺;thelocalspronouncedthisinCantoneseasPoonYu)foundedin214BC.Thecityhasbeencontinuouslyoccupiedsincethattime.Panyuwasexpandedwhenitbecamethecapitalofthe
5、NanyueKingdom(南越)in206BC.Recentarchaeologicalfoundingofherpalacesuggeststhatthecitymighthavetradedfrequentlywithforeignersbythesearoutes.The25foreigntradecontinuedthrougheveryfollowingdynastyandthecityremainsamajorinternationaltradingporttothisday.TheHanDynastya
6、nnexedNanyuein111BC,andPanyubecameaprovincialcapitalandremainssountilthisday.In226AD,thecitybecametheseatoftheGuangPrefecture(廣州;Guangzhou).Therefore,'Guangzhou'wasthenameoftheprefecture,notofthecity.However,peoplegrewaccustomedtocallingthecityGuangzhou,insteado
7、fPanyu.AlthoughtheChinesenameofGuangzhoureplacedPanyuasthenameofthewalledcity,PanyuwasstillthenameoftheareasurroundingthewalledcityuntiltheendofQingera.ArabsandPersianssackedGuangzhou(knowntothemasSin-Kalan)inAD758,2accordingtoalocalGuangzhougovernmentreportonOc
