1、ANINSIGHTINTOCROSSCULTURALCOMMUNICATIONSTRATEGIESINHEALTHADissertationsubmittedbyVictoriaA.CloseFortheawardofPhD2011ABSTRACTThisresearchstudylookedintowhatstrategieswereimplementedinAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderHealthServices(ATSIHSs)todecreasethecommunicationbarriersbetweenhealthprofessiona

2、lsandAboriginalpeople.Historically,thelinesofcommunicationbetweenAboriginalpeopleandhealthprofessionalshavebeenmisunderstoodthroughmistrustandmiscommunicationandtheneedtoundertakeappropriateculturalawarenessandsensitivitytraining.Miscommunicationhasandcontinuestoleadtomisdiagnosisofhealthissuest

3、hatcarrysevererepercussionsfortheAboriginalpeoplewithlongevityfarbelowthatoftheirnon-Aboriginalcounterparts.ThedatawasgatheredfromfourATSIHSsbyholdingfocusgroupsinSouthEastQueensland.Theresearchrevealedthat17strategiesweresuccessfullyimplementedbythefourATSIHSswithverygoodresults.Findingsandreco

4、mmendationsbywayofareportwillbedisseminatedthroughouthealthorganisations.Qualitativeresearchmethodswereusedbyutilisinginterpretivistandconstructivistsmodesfollowedbythematicanalysis.Whilethesamplingareawassmallandthestrategiesusedweresuccessfulinimprovingcommunicationbetweenhealthprofessionalsan
