3、．Idiomaticityinlanguagehasbecomethetopicofcomlnonconcerninthefieldoflinguistics．Theimportanceofidiomaticityindiscoursehasrecentlybeenrecognized，butstudiesofithavebeenveryfew．Therefore，basedonallanalysisofWoodyAllen’Sfilmscripts(seeAppendix)，attemptsaremadetostudyspokendiscours

4、eintermsofidiomaticity．Thestudybeginswithanintroductionoftherecognitionofidiomaticityinlanguage．Thenafewdefinitionsandterminologicalissuesrelatedtothephenomenonofidiomaticityareexplained．Decisionsaremadetofocusontheidiomaticexpressionsasthemainformofrealizationforcharacterizin

5、gidiomaticityinspokendiscourse．Ageneraldescriptionofthenatureandperspectivesofstudyconcerningidiomaticexpressionsaregiven．AccordingtoFernando(2004：69—74)，thereareformalcategorizationandfunctionalcategorizationofidiomaticexpressions．Theformalcategorizationofidiomaticexpressions

6、aidstheidentificationandrecognitionofalargenumberofvarioustypesofidiomaticexpressions．Thecategorizationbasedonthethreemeta-functionsofHalliday’SSystemicFunctionalGrammar,identifiedasideational，interpersonal，andrelational，areadoptedasthefunctionalcategorizationofidiomaticexpres

7、sions．Usefulinsightsobtainedfromthetheoreticalfoundationsleadtotheinvestigationofidiomaticexpressionsinspokendiscourse．ThusthepresentpaperlocatestheresearchonananalysisofWoodyAllen’Sfilmscripts(totalingabout16，620words)asthecorpus．The10filmscriptsselectedarecomposedofimprovise
