2、estreetscarryingwhatisleftoftheirpossessionsinshoppingbagsorgrocerycarts.Therearedisorientedmencurleduponbenches,instairwells,oralongsidewalls.Therearechildren–somerunawaysandsomethrowawaysscrounge(偷,骗取)forfoodandshelter.Thenumberofhomelesspeopleinunderdevelopedsocietiesinthemid-19

3、80swasestimatedbytheUnitedNations(UN)tobemorethan100million.Theso-called“new”homelessliveinthedeveloped,industrializednationsofEurope,NorthAmerica,andEastAsia.Accuratestatisticshavebeenimpossibletoverify,inpartbecauseoftheconflictingviewpointsonthesubjectofhomelessness.Politicians,

4、lawyers,andotherswhobecomeadvocatesforthehomelesshavesaidthattherearefrom2to3millionhomelessintheUSalone.Otherswhohavestudiedtheproblemfromalesssympatheticpointofviewsuggestthatthenumberiscloserto300,000.Onereasonforstatisticaluncertaintyisthecompositionofthehomelesspopulation.Some

5、familiessuffertemporarypovertybecauseoflossofajob.Unabletoaffordrentormortgagepayment,theymaytemporarilyjointheranksofthehomelessofthehomelessforaperiodofdaysorweeks(ortheymaylivewithrelatives).Onceanotherjobisfound,thefamilycanusuallyaffordshelteroncemore.Thenumberofthosewhoaretru
