4、rticipantsandbringstheissuesofanyproblemintosharpfocus.However,itleaveslittleroomforcompromise.Indeed,itseemsthedebatersareoftenmoreinterestedinwinningtheargumentthanseekingjusticeortruth.Furthermore,muchoflifeisnotazero-sumgamewherethereisawinnerandaloser.Many

5、wouldarguethatcooperationandnegotiationtowardsacompromiseisabettermodelforlife.Infact,manyofthegreatdebatesinscienceendedwithacompromisesolution,whichbringsustothetechniqueathand.Structuredcontroversyisateachingtechniquethatusesthestrengthsofconventionaldebatea

6、ndendswithtwosidesseekingwaystoresolvetheconflictthroughcompromise.ItsvirtuesintheclassroomhavebeenchampionedandsummarizedbyJohnsonandJohnson(1989)andJohnson,Johnson,andHolubee(1992).Comparedtomostothermethodsofinstruction,structuredcontroversyresultsingreaters
