2、ens:OntheHistoryandImpactofUsenetandtheInternetwaspublishedinEnglish.Laterthatyear,inOctober,aJapanesetranslationofthebookwaspublished.Todaywearecelebratingtheoccasionofthe15thAnniversaryofthisevent.InhonorofthisoccasionIwanttobothlookbackandlookforwardtowardtryingtoass

3、essthesignificanceofthebookandofMichaelHauben’sdiscoveryoftheemergenceofthenetizen.Iwanttobrieflylookatwhathashappenedintheinterimofthese15yearstowardtryingtounderstandwhatnewadvancethisdevelopmentmakespossible.Bytheearly1990s,MichaelrecognizedthattheInternetwasasignifi

4、cantnewdevelopmentandthatitwouldhaveanimpactonourworld.Hewascuriousaboutwhatthatimpactwouldbeandwhatcouldhelpittohaveabeneficialimpact.ThebookwascompiledfromaseriesofarticleswrittenbyMichaelandbymewhichwerepostedontheNetastheywerewrittenandwhichsometimesledtosubstantial

5、commentsanddiscussion.ThemostimportantarticleinthebookwasclearlyMichael’sarticle,“TheNetandNetizens:theImpacttheNetHasonPeople’sLives.”Michaelopenedthearticlewiththepropheticwords,whichappearedonlinefirstin1993:“Welcometothe21stCentury.YouareaNetizen(aNetCitizen)andyoue
