3、itionaimsatstrengtheningresearcheffortsattheUniversityofGroningen(RUG)thatutilizethenewexperimentaltechniquesatsynchrotron,neutronandfree-electroncentresforthestudyoftheelectronicpropertiesofcomplexmaterials.Thesematerialsarecharacterizedbycompetinginteractionsofspinandorbitalmo

4、ments,polardisplacementsandstructuraldistortionsandleadtophenomenasuchasunconventionalsuperconductivity,colossalmagnetoresistanceandmultiferroicity.Wearelookingforcandidatesinterestedinutilizingthetechnicaldevelopmentofcutting-edgescatteringandspectroscopyofsynchrotronradiationa

5、ndneutronsourcesoncomplexmaterials.ThecandidateisexpectedtoteachatthebachelorandmasterlevelwithintheschoolofNaturalSciencesandTechnology,andtocontributetotheTopmasterprograminNanoscienceorganizedbytheZernikeInstitute.4.DisciplineandexternalsituationInrecentyearstheexperimentalpo

6、ssibilitiesofmaterialsresearchmakinguseofsynchrotronradiationandneutronsourceshaveimprovedsubstantiallyenablingtheiruseforadvancedmeasurementsbyscatteringand/orspectroscopy.ThesynchrotronbasedcentersESRF,HASYLAB,AdvancedPhotonSource,Spring8haveimprovedtheirflux,spatialandtimeres

7、olutionenablingnovelexperimentalmethodsatvariousbeamlinesoncomplexsystems.InafewyearsthenextgenerationlightsourcessuchasXFELatHamburgwillincreasethefluxfurtherbyseveralordersofmagnitude.LikewisetheneutroncentersexpandtheirpossibilitieswithimprovedfluxandbeampropertiesatILL,ISISw
