3、thodsinappliedlinguistics.Dr.NunanisontheAdvisoryBoardoftheAsianEFLJournalWeneedtolookdeeplyattimesintothespecificneedsoflearnersinAsiaandthePacificregionwhowecannotforgetarestillverymuchlivinginlocalcontexts-notonlyanevidentlyincreasinglyglobalone.T
4、hatbeingsaid,thereismuchtolearnfromthesestudiesthatcanbeborrowedandlentacrossanumberoffrontiers.Further,itisevidentthatwemustnotexcluderesearchintosecondlanguagelearningbecauseofititsgeographicalorculturalsource.Thathastounderlayanimportantpartofthei
5、ntegrityofresearchandthisbookisverymuchdevotedtothatprinciple.Oneapproach,thatdoesseemtomeetawiderangeofcross-regionalneedsandtowhichanumberoftheauthorsdealwithdirectlyorindirectlyisonetowhichIhavecontinuouslybeendrawingattentionandanalysisformoretha
6、ntwodecades.Itisthatoftaskbasedlearning.Interestingly,itspopularityisacceleratinginEastAsiaaswellaselsewhere.AdemonstrationofthisisthefactthatIwasaskedbytheChineseGovernmenttoprepareanewtaskbasedpublicationfortheEnglishcurriculum.Chinarepresents,asLi
7、(2004)statesinhisincludedwork,theworld'slargestsourceofEnglishlearners,letalonethelargestsegmentofEFLlearnersanywhereintheworld.IndiawithitshugepopulationandapparentnewboomforEnglishlearningasmentionedbyGupta(2005)isalsoalargebeaconofEnglishlearning.
