3、eintellectualenergyofover300individualswhocontributedtoidentifyinganddistillingacompendiumof“Needs,GapsandOpportunitiesinVisionResearch.”Inmajoritytheyrepresentedexpertiseinbiomedicaldisciplinescloselytiedtovisionresearch.Withsomanyopportunitiescreatedbysubstantialadvance

4、sinbothnewandtraditionalresearchareas,thisdocumentrepresentsthecriticalfirststepinoureffortstoidentifythebroadspectrumofvisionresearchpriorities.Itwillalsoincreasepublicawarenessoftheimportanceofvisionresearchandtheaccomplishmentsthatthevisionresearchcommunityhasdelivered

5、inrecentyears.Withthisthoroughaccountingofthecurrentstateofvisionresearchinplace,andinconsultationwiththeNationalAdvisoryEyeCouncil(NAEC),theNationalEyeInstitutewillnowembarkonasecondphaseoftheplanningprocessandwillextendandexpandoureffortstoincludebroadanddiverseinputfro

6、macademia,industry,privatefoundations,andothergovernmentalagenciesandindividuals.Theemphasiswillbetolookbeyondthenextstepsandtothehorizonswheregreatopportunitymayliethatcouldbecapturedthroughcarefulinvestmentinthefuture.Historically,greatadvanceshavedevelopedfromunlikelys

7、ources,andwithassistancefromtheNAEC,weareplanningaprocesstosolicitnovelframingoffarreachinggoalsinconsultationwithcreativescientistsandindividualsfromdisciplinesbeyondvisionsciencealone.Carefulascertainmentandidentificationofideasandapproachesfromacrossthefullspectrumofsc
