2、vereasonswhyweshouldexpectittocontinuesoforthefuture.FIRST.Womaninnaturalphysicalstrengthissogreatlyinferiortomanthatsheisentirelyinhispower,quiteincapableofself-defense,trustingtohisgenerosityforprotection.Insavagelifethisgreatsuperiorityofphysicalst
3、rengthmakesmantheabsolutemaster,womantheabjectslave.And,althougheverysuccessivestepincivilisationlessensthedistancebetweenthesexes,andrendersthesituationofwomansaferandeasier,still,innostateofsociety,howeverhighlycultivated,hasperfectequalityyetexiste
4、d.Thisdifferenceinphysicalstrengthmust,initself,alwayspreventsuchperfectequality,sincewomaniscompelledeverydayofherlifetoappealtomanforprotection,andforsupport.SECONDLY.Womanisalso,thoughinaverymuchlessdegree,inferiortomaninintellect.Thedifferenceinth
5、isparticularmayveryprobablybeonlyaconsequenceofgreaterphysicalstrength,givinggreaterpowerofenduranceandincreaseofforcetotheintellectualfacultyconnectedwithit.Inmanycases,asbetweenthebestindividualmindsofbothsexes,thedifferenceisnodoubtveryslight.There
6、havebeenwomenofaveryhighorderofgenius;therehavebeenverymanywomenofgreattalent;and,asregardswhatiscommonlycalledcleverness,ageneralquicknessandclearnessofmindwithinlimitedbounds,thenumberofcleverwomenmaypossiblyhavebeenevenlargerthanthatofclevermen.But
7、,takingtheoneinfallibleruleforourguide,judgingofthetreebyitsfruits,wearemetbythefactthatthegreatestachievementsoftheraceineveryfieldofintellectualculturehavebeentheworkofman.Itistruethattheadvantagesofintellectualeducationhavebeen,untilrecently,veryge
