1、1.Introduction1.1BackgroundofthestudyTheEnglishlanguage,whichisagloballanguage,ishighlystressedineducationandsocietyinChina.ChinesestudentslearnEnglishfromkindergartentouniversityformanyyearsandtolearnitwellisamustformodemChinesepeopletoacceptchallengesforthesakeofimprovingourabi

2、lity,studyingfurtherorhuntingforagoodjoborrejuvenatingChina,Butinourcountry,EnglishisnotadailycommunicationtoolforUSandwelackagoodnaturalenvironmenttolearnit.ThusEnglishlearnershavetotryhardtoimprovetheirEnglishlevelthroughreading.Andamongtheabilitiesoflistening,speakingreading,w

3、ritingandtranslation,weoftenputreadingforemost.Besides,readingisthefoundationofallotherskillsinlanguagelearning.AsWenQiufang(1996)andHuChundong(1996)pointout,readingisbothanaimandameansoflanguagelearning.Itisnotedthat95%ofknowledgecomesfromreadingbooks.Andthesyllabusofbothcollege

4、sandmiddleschoolsputheavyemphasisonthedevelopmentofstudents。readingability.Moreover,readingoftenmakesupthelargestproportionofvarioustypesoflanguageproficiencytestpapers.ThereforewecanseethatreadingplaysanimportantroleinL2learningandteaching.Englishreadingisofgreatimportancetolear

5、ners.HenceresearchintoEnglishreadingisimperativeandrecently,researchesintoEnglishreadingattractmoreandmoreattention.Asamatteroffact,inEnglishlearningsomestudentsseemtolearnfasterthanothers,e—denthoughtheyareinthesameclassroomwiththesameteacher’somestudentsmakerapidprogress,wherea

6、ssomestudentslearnslowlythoughtheystudyhardallthetime.Thisisnotbecauseofintelligencedifferencebutduetootherfactors.Research(Ellis,1994;Oxford,1990)showstherearelearnerdifferencesinlanguagelearning,andtobeasuccessfullanguagelearnerdependsontheinteractionofmanyfactors.AccordingtoFe
