3、vitiationduetothebiasoflove.Yetwesmile,indeed,andforgiveAvisEverhardfortheheroiclinesuponwhichshemodelledherhusband.Weknowto-daythathewasnotsocolossal,andthatheloomedamongtheeventsofhistimeslesslargelythantheManuscriptwouldleadustobelieve.WeknowthatErnestEverhardwasanexceptionall
4、ystrongman,butnotsoexceptionalashiswifethoughthimtobe.Hewas,afterall,butoneofalargenumberofheroeswho,throughouttheworld,devotedtheirlivestotheRevolution;thoughitmustbeconcededthathedidunusualwork,especiallyinhiselaborationandinterpretationofworking-classphilosophy.'Proletariansci
5、ence'and'proletarianphilosophy'werehisphrasesforit,andthereinheshowstheprovincialismofhismind-adefect,however,thatwasduetothetimesandthatnoneinthatdaycouldescape.ButtoreturntotheManuscript.Especiallyvaluableisitincommunicatingtousthefeelofthoseterribletimes.Nowheredowefindmoreviv
6、idlyportrayedthepsychologyofthepersonsthatlivedinthatturbulentperiodembracedbetweentheyears1912and1932-theirmistakesandignorance,theirdoubtsandfearsandmisapprehensions,theirethicaldelusions,theirviolentpassions,theirinconceivablesordidnessandselfishness.Thesearethethingsthatareso
