4、lethatHaggardwaspresentinPretoriafortheofficialannouncementoftheBritishannexationoftheBoerRepublicoftheTransvaal.Infact,HaggardraisedtheUnionFlagandwasforcedtoreadoutmuchoftheproclamationfollowingthelossofvoiceoftheofficialoriginallyentrus-tedwiththeduty.Asayoungman,Haggardfelldeeplyinlove
5、withLi-lithJackson,whomheintendedtomarryonceheobtainedpaidemploy-mentinSouthAfrica.In1878hebecameRegistraroftheHighCourtintheTransvaal,butwhenhesenthisfatheralettertellinghimthathein-tendedtoreturntoEnglandinordertomarryLilithJacksonhisfatherrepliedthatheforbadeituntilhehadmadeacareerforhi
6、mself.In1879heheardthatLilithhadmarriedsomeoneelse.Whenheeventuallyre-turnedtoEnglandhemarriedafriendofhissister,MarianaLouisaMar-gitsonandbroughtherbacktoAfrica.LatertheyhadasonnamedJock(whodiedofmeaslesattheageof10)andthreedaughters.ReturningagaintoEnglandin1882,thecouplesettledinDitchin
