5、UnionFlagandwasforcedtoreadoutmuchoftheproclamationfollowingthelossofvoiceoftheofficialoriginallyentrus-tedwiththeduty.Asayoungman,HaggardfelldeeplyinlovewithLi-lithJackson,whomheintendedtomarryonceheobtainedpaidemploy-mentinSouthAfrica.In1878hebecameRegi
6、straroftheHighCourtintheTransvaal,butwhenhesenthisfatheralettertellinghimthathein-tendedtoreturntoEnglandinordertomarryLilithJacksonhisfatherrepliedthatheforbadeituntilhehadmadeacareerforhimself.In1879heheardthatLilithhadmarriedsomeoneelse.Whenheeventuall
7、yre-turnedtoEnglandhemarriedafriendofhissister,MarianaLouisaMar-gitsonandbroughtherbacktoAfrica.LatertheyhadasonnamedJock(whodiedofmeaslesattheageof10)andthreedaughters.ReturningagaintoEnglandin1882,thecouplesettledinDitchingham,Norfolk.LaterhelivedinKess
