3、usterSurvey(EDisCS)-anESOlargeprogrammeaimedatthestudyofclusterstructureandclustergalaxyevolutionoverasignificantfractionofcosmictime-andarediscussedintheframeworkofthecurrentstandardparadigmofstructureformation.1.IntroductionGalaxyclustersarecommonlycons
4、ideredasgoodlaboratoriesforstudyingthephysicalprocessesthatdrivegalaxyevolution.Thisforemostroleisprimarilyduetothepracticaladvantageofhavingmanygalaxies(allapproximatelyatthesameredshift)inarelativelysmallregionofthesky,sothatefficientob-servationscanbeca
5、rriedoutevenwithmodestfieldsofview,andwithlimitedamountsoftelescopetime.Withinourcurrentstandardparadigmforstructureformation,galaxyclustersrepresent,however,biasedenvironmentsoriginatingfromthehighest(andrarest)peaksintheprimordialdensityfield,whoseevo-lu
6、tionappearstobemorerapidandperhapsmoreviolentthaninregionsoftheUniversewithaveragedensity(seediscussioninDeLucia2007).Theinstrumentalcapabilitiesachievedinrecentyears,andthecompletionarXiv:0804.1743v1[astro-ph]10Apr2008ofmodernlargephotometricandspectros
7、copicsurveyshaveprovidedarapidlygrowingdatabaseofhigh–redshiftclusters,andwidenedthemassrangeoftheexaminedsystems.Itisnowbecomingevidentthatthephysicalpropertiesofclustergalaxiesdependnotonlyonredshiftbutalsoonclustermass,andthatthisdependencyneedstobeta
8、kenintoaccountforacorrectinterpretationofobservationaldataintermsofevolution.Inthisframework,theEDisCSclustersamplerepresentsanidealdataset.EDisCSprovideshomogeneousphotometryandspectroscopyfor20fieldscontaininggalaxycluste
