3、ation.Nevertheless,ourapproachyieldsapparentlysuperlu-minalpropagationforthecaseoffrustratedtotalinternalreflection(FTIR),thatis,atransmittedwavepacketappearsonthefarsideofthegapatthesametimethatthecorrespondingincidentpacketcrossesthefrontone.Thus,inthisexamplesuperluminalityisjustanil
4、lusion,beingcon-sistentwithbothcasualityandclassicalelectrodynamics.Westudytheoriginoftheapparentsuperluminalityinthiscase,whichisinherenttolightpulsepropagationinfreespaceanddoesnotdependontheparticularsoflight-matterinteraction,andfindthatitisduetopropagationfromthelateralwingsofthein
5、cidentpulsetothecentralpartofthetransmittedpulse.Thus,notwith-standingtheirsimilarities,FTIRisnotequivalentto1Dtunneling.Weproposeexperimentstotestourexplanationofsuperluminalityusingopaquescreenstoblockpartofthewavefront,althoughwedemonstratethatthepropagationofsmoothfinitepulsesconstr
