2、versity,Lund2012AbstractWithinprocessindustry,andinmanyotherareas,thePIDcontrollerisresponsibleforhandlingregulatorycontrol.AneducatedguessisthatthenumberofexecutingPIDcontrolloopsliesinthebillions(2011)andtherearenosignsindicatingadecreaseofthisnumber.ProperlytuningthePIDcon
3、troller,i.e.,settingitsparametervaluesbasedoncharacteristicsoftheprocessitcontrolstogetherwithrobust-nesscriteria,iscommonlybothtimelyandcostly.Hence,thetuningisoftenoverseen,resultinginnumerouspoorlytunedloops.Theseresultinunnecessarylackofperformance,whichmightbebothhazardo
4、usanduneconomic.Ifalineartimeinvariantmodeloftheprocessisgiven,thereexistsnumerousfeasibletuningmethods.However,automaticallyobtainingevenalowcomplexitymodelisfarfromtrivialintheabsenceofaprioriprocessinformation.Thisthesisaddressessystemidentificationtobeusedintheauto-maticP
5、IDtuningprocedure.Amethodforgeneratingtheidentificationinputsignalisproposed.Itsobjectiveistoyieldhighermodelaccuracyinthefrequencyrangewhereitismostneededforrobusttuning.Subsequently,methodsforobtainingprocessmodelsfrominputandoutputdatapairsareproposedanddiscussed.Allmethod
6、sarepre-sentedusingnumeroussimulationsandlaboratoryexperiments.Finally,asimulationstudyofclosed-loopanesthesiainhumanpa-tients,basedonclinicallyobtainedmodelparameters,ispresented.ThenoveltyliesinthatthedepthofhypnosisPIDcontrollerisindi-vidualizedbasedondatacollectedduringth
