2、on"asfundamentalbreakswithEurope'sreligiousheritage,theyarepresentedascomplexculturalpermutationswithmuchcontinuity;forinheritedtheologicalpatternsofinterpretingexperiencedeterminedtoalargedegreetheconditions,possibilities,andlimitationsoftheformsofhistoricalimaginationre

3、alizablebynineteenth-centurysecularintellectuals.ThispointismadebyexaminingthethoughtoftheGermantheologianW.M.L.deWette(1780-1849)andthatoftheSwiss-GermanhistorianJacobBurckhardt(1818-97).Atheologicalradical,deWettedisputedorthodoxdoctrineandpracticedhistoricalbiblicalcri

4、ticism.ThesonofaProtestantminister,Burckhardtaspiredtobecomeaclergymanandstudiedtheology-untilheencountereddeWetteattheUniversityofBasel.HisstudiesunderdeWetteprovokedareligiouscrisisthatcompelledhimtoforsaketheologyforacareerinhistory.Burckhardt'sencounterwithdeWetteandh

5、isdecisionforhistoryovertheologyareinterpretedasrevealingmomentsinnineteenth-centuryintel-lectualhistory.Byexaminingtheencounter,itslargerhistoricalcontext,andthethoughtofbothmen,thebookdemonstratesthecentralityoftheolog-icalconcernsandformsofknowledgeintheemergenceofmode
