2、London.ThenineteenthcenturyhadbeenaperiodofwesternimperialistinterventionandexploitationinChina,culminatinginthebrutalsuppressionoftheBoxerrebellionin1900.Thisquasi-colonialismhadalsoresultedintheappropriationofChineseculturalartifactsandtheirimitationsinthemuseumsandsalonsofthe
3、west.Orientaliconographyanditsliteraryinterpretationwerepartofaconsciouslyacknowledgedchinoiserie.Buttherewasalsogenuineandmorescholarlysinology,exemplifiedbyGiles’sHistoryofChineseLiteratureof1901.ThistextwasintroducedtoPoundbyAllenUpward,traveler,colonialdiplomatandanthropolog
4、ist,whosework,judgingbythenumerousreferencestoitinPound’sletters,clearlyimpressedhim,UpwardwasalsoresponsibleforintroducingPoundtoConfuciusandMenciusinFrenchtranslations.AswelltherewereUpward’s‘Chinese’poems,entitled‘ScentedLeaverfromaChineseJar’,whichPoundpromotedinPoetryin1913
5、.InalettertoHarrietMonroeregardingtheirpublicationhenotes:’Upwardisaveryinterestingchap.Hesays,bytheway,thattheChinesestuffisnotaparaphrase,butthathemadeitupoutofhishead,usingacertainamountofChinesereminiscence.Ithinkweshouldinsertanotetothateffect,astheoneinthecurrentnumberismi
6、sleading’(SL.,p.23).ExtractsfromUpward’sworkalsoappearedinthefirstimagistanthology,DesImagists,in1914.Hispoemsareshortprose-likeanecdotesofwhichthefollowingisatypicalexample:ThesailorboywholeantoverthesideoftheJunkofManyPearls,andcombedthegreentressesoftheseawithhisivoryfingers,
