2、ationis98%Chinese,andthatgroupitselfisbynomeanshomogeneous.ThemanydifferentworldsandsubcultureswithintheChinesecommunityincludeurbanpoor,theeducatedmiddleclass,jet-setmulti-passportholders,Putonghua(Mandarin)speakingemigreintellectuals,Shanghai-nativebusi
3、nessmen,youngintelligentsia,civilservants,oldvillagefamiliesandrecentarrivalsfromtheChinaMainland.Theforeigncommunity,althoughnumericallysmall,isequallyvaried.Withinit,onefindsbusinesspeople,professionals,educators,missionaries,craftsmenandlaborersfromman
4、ypartsoftheworld.WithintheHongKongSpecialAdministrativeRegion's(SAR)1075squarekilometres,onecanobservemanyoftheparadoxesofmodemChineselifeanddevelopment.Modemurbanindustrialcenters,forexample,withtheirfrenziedpaceandcongestion,arejuxtaposedwithtraditional
5、farmingandfishingvillages.CulturalperformancesfromeverycontinenttakeplaceinthesamehallsastraditionalChineseoperas.ThemostexperimentalinternationalartsharesgallerywallswithChinesecalligraphyandmountainandstreampaintings.MostoftheHongKongSAR'ssevenmillionin
6、habitantsliveonthe82squarekilometersofHongKongIslandandthenearly25squarekilometersoftheadjacentKowloonpeninsula.TheNewTerritories,comprising740squarekilometersthatstretchtotheMainlandborderandscoresofislets,containthriving'NewTowns'suchasSharinandTaiPo,as
