2、eteachingmaterialsandconductresearch.However,theyoftenstruggletoorganizelargenumbersofdigitalimages.Theyalsolookforefficientmethodsofeditingimages,sothattheycanproducedifferentversionsofanimagefortheWeb,email,andprinting.Thispaperwilladdressstrategiesforproc
3、essingimagesbothindividuallyandinbatches,aswellastechniquesfororganizingimagesusinginexpensivesoftware.Manyofthestrategiesdiscussedwillworkinallthreemajoroperatingenvironments:Windows,Unix,andMacintosh.Sometoolsspecifictoeachplatformwillalsobecovered.Introdu
4、ctionInrecentyears,fourfactorshaveledtothewidespreaduseofdigitalimages:First,thosetechnologieswhichmakeiteasiertodisseminateimages,inparticulartheWorldWideWebandemail.Secondly,adropinthecostofhardware,suchasscannersanddigitalcameraswhichareusedtocreatedigita
5、limages.Thirdly,inexpensiveharddisksforstorageanddevicesforreadingandwritingCD-ROMs.Lastly,thelowcostofoutputtingimagesonacomputerdisplayascomparedtothehighcostoffullcolorprinting.Universitieshavefollowedthistrendtowardagreateruseofdigitalimages.Facultyuseim
6、agesasbuildingblocksofcoursecontentandfordisseminatingresearchdata.Collegeadministratorsutilizeimagestoadvertisescholasticprogramstoattractpotentialstudents.Further,campusdocumentsthatusedtoonlyconsistoftextarenowbEingrebornontheWebfilledwithimages.Eventextu
7、alinformationisoftenconveyedthroughdigitalimagesbecauseHTMLcurrentlylacksstrongtoolsforcontrollingtheappearanceandlayoutoftext.Thiswidespreaduseofimageshascreatedagreatdemandfortoolsfortheirprocessingandmanagement.AvarietyofapplicationsthatcanrunonWindows,Ma
