5、cificdifficultiesencounteredandrecommendations.INTRODUCTIONTBMexcavationrepresentabiginvestmentinanunflexiblebutpotentiallyveryfastmethodofexcavatingandsupportingarocktunnel(Barton,1996).Whenunfavorableconditionsareencounteredwithoutwarning,timescheduleandpracticalconsequen
6、cesareoftenfargreaterinaTBMdriventunnelthaninadrillandblasttunnel.Theunfavorableconditionscanbeproducedbyeitherarockmassofverypoorqualitycausinginstabilityofthetunnelorarockmassofveryquality(i.e.strongandmassiverockmass)determiningverylowpenetrationrates.However,itistobeobs
