3、ctober1795inMoorgate,London,England,thefirstchildborntoFrancesJennings(b.1775-d.1810)andThomasKeats(d.1804),anemployeeofaliverystable.Hehadthreesiblings:George(1797-1841),Thomas(1799-1818),andFrancesMary"Fanny"(1803-1889).AfterleavingschoolinEnfield,Keatswentontoapprenticew
4、ithDr.Hammond,asurgeoninEdmonton.Afterhisfatherdiedinaridingaccident,andhismotherdiedoftuberculosis,JohnandhisbrothersmovedtoHampstead.ItwasherethatKeatsmetCharlesArmitageBrown(1787-1842)whowouldbecomeagreatfriend.Rememberinghisfirstmeetingwithhim,Brownwrites"Hisfullfineeye
5、swerelustrouslyintellectual,andbeaming(atthattime!)".Muchgrievedbyhisdeath,Brownworkedformanyyearsonhismemoirandbiography,LifeofJohnKeats(1841).InitBrownclaimsthatitwasnotuntilKeatsreadEdmundSpencer'sFaeryQueenthatherealisedhisowngiftforthepoetic.Keatswasanavidstudentinthef
6、ieldsofmedicineandnaturalhistory,buthethenturnedhisattentionstotheliteraryworksofsuchauthorsasWilliamShakespeareandGeoffreyChaucer.KeatshadhispoemspublishedinthemagazinesofthedayattheencouragementofmanyincludingJamesHenryLeighHuntEsq.(1784-1859),editoroftheExaminerandtowhom
7、KeatsdedicatedhisfirstcollectionPoems(1817).Itincludes"ToMyBrotherGeorge","OSolitude!IfIMustWithTheeDwell",and"HappyisEngland!ICouldBeContent".UponitsappearanceaseriesofpersonalattacksdirectedatKeatsensuedinthepagesofBlackwood'sMagazine.Despitethecontroversysurroundinghisli
