2、inEurope,primarilyGermany,toobtainoptimumstructuralperformancefrommaterialwhichwasinshortsupplyduringthepost-waryears.Cable-stayedbridgesareconstructedalongastructuralsystemwhichcomprisesanorthotropicdeckandcontinuousgirderswhicharesupportedbystays,i.e.i

3、nclinedcablespassingoverorattachedtotowerslocatedatthemainpiers.Theideaofusingcablestosupportbridgespansisbynomeansnew,andanumberofexamplesofthistypeofconstructionwererecordedalongtimeago.Unfortunatelythesystemingeneralmetwithlittlesuccess,duetothefactth

4、atthestaticwerenotfullyunderstoodandthatunsuitablematerialssuchasbarsandchainswereusedtoformtheinclinedsupportsorstays.Staysmadeinthismannercouldnotbefullytensionedandinaslackconditionallowedlargedeformationsofthedeckbeforetheycouldparticipateintakingthe

5、tensileloadsforwhichtheywereintendedWideandsuccessfulapplicationofcable-stayedsystemswasrealizedonlyrecently,withtheintroductionofhigh-strengthsteels,orthotropicdecks,developmentofweldingtechniquesandprogressinstructuralanalysis.Thedevelopmentandapplicat

6、ionofelectroniccomputersopenedupnewandpracticallyunlimitedpossibilitiesfortheexactsolutionofthesehighlystaticallyindeterminatesystemsandforprecisestaticallyanalysisoftheirthree-dimensionalperformance.Existingcable-stayedbridgesprovideusefuldataregardingd

7、esign,fabrication,erectionandmaintenanceofthenewsystem.Withtheconstructionofthesebridgesmanybasicproblemsencounteredintheirengineeringareshowntohavebeensuccessfullysolved.However,theseimportantdatahaveapparentlyneverbeforebeensystematicallypresented.Thef
