2、yGermany,toobtainoptimumstructuralperformancefrommaterialwhichwasinshortsupplyduringthepost-waryears.Cable-stayedbridgesareconstructedalongastructuralsystemwhichcomprisesanorthotropicdeckandcontinuousgirderswhicharesupportedbystays,i.e.inclinedcablespassingoverorattached

3、totowerslocatedatthemainpiers.Theideaofusingcablestosupportbridgespansisbynomeansnew,andanumberofexamplesofthistypeofconstructionwererecordedalongtimeago.Unfortunatelythesystemingeneralmetwithlittlesuccess,duetothefactthatthestaticwerenotfullyunderstoodandthatunsuitablem

4、aterialssuchasbarsandchainswereusedtoformtheinclinedsupportsorstays.StaysmadeinthismannercouldnotbefullytensionedandinaslackconditionallowedlargedeformationsofthedeckbeforetheycouldparticipateintakingthetensileloadsforwhichtheywereintendedWideandsuccessfulapplicationofca

5、ble-stayedsystemswasrealizedonlyrecently,withtheintroductionofhigh-strengthsteels,orthotropicdecks,developmentofweldingtechniquesandprogressinstructuralanalysis.Thedevelopmentandapplicationofelectroniccomputersopenedupnewandpracticallyunlimitedpossibilitiesfortheexactsol

6、utionofthesehighlystaticallyindeterminatesystemsandforprecisestaticallyanalysisoftheirthree-dimensionalperformance.Existingcable-stayedbridgesprovideusefuldataregardingdesign,fabrication,erectionandmaintenanceofthenewsystem.Withtheconstructionofthesebridgesmanybasicprobl

7、emsencounteredintheirengineeringareshowntohavebeensuccessfullysolved.However,theseimportantdatahaveapparentlyneverbeforebeensystematicallypresented.Thefollowingfactorshelpedmakethesuccessfuldevelopmentofcable-stayedbridgespossible:(1)Thedevelopmentofmethodsofstructuralan
