2、sinEurope,primarilyGermany,toobtainoptimumstructuralperformancefrommaterialwhichwasinshortsupplyduringthepost-waryears.Cable-stayedbridgesareconstructedalongastructuralsystemwhichcomprisesanorthotropicdeckandcontinuousgirderswhicharesupportedbystays,i.e

3、.inclinedcablespassingoverorattachedtotowerslocatedatthemainpiers.Theideaofusingcablestosupportbridgespansisbynomeansnew,andanumberofexamplesofthistypeofconstructionwererecordedalongtimeago.Unfortunatelythesystemingeneralmetwithlittlesuccess,duetothefac

4、tthatthestaticwerenotfullyunderstoodandthatunsuitablematerialssuchasbarsandchainswereusedtoformtheinclinedsupportsorstays.Staysmadeinthismannercouldnotbefullytensionedandinaslackconditionallowedlargedeformationsofthedeckbeforetheycouldparticipateintakin

5、gthetensileloadsforwhichtheywereintendedWideandsuccessfulapplicationofcable-stayedsystemswasrealizedonlyrecently,withtheintroductionofhigh-strengthsteels,orthotropicdecks,developmentofweldingtechniquesandprogressinstructuralanalysis.Thedevelopmentandapp

6、licationofelectroniccomputersopenedupnewandpracticallyunlimitedpossibilitiesfortheexactsolutionofthesehighlystaticallyindeterminatesystemsandforprecisestaticallyanalysisoftheirthree-dimensionalperformance.Existingcable-stayedbridgesprovideusefuldatarega

7、rdingdesign,fabrication,erectionandmaintenanceofthenewsystem.Withtheconstructionofthesebridgesmanybasicproblemsencounteredintheirengineeringareshowntohavebeensuccessfullysolved.However,theseimportantdatahaveapparentlyneverbeforebeensystematicallypresent

8、ed.Thefollowingfactorshelpedmakethesuccessfuldevelopmentofcable-stayedbridgespossible:(1)Thedevelopmentofmethodsofstructuralanalysisofhighstaticallyindeterminatestructuresandapplicationofelectroniccomputers.(2)Thedevelopmentofort
