2、ngthecharacters’mentalactivityandmotivatingtheplots’developmentandtherealizationofhiswritingintention.However,thedialectwhichisincomparablyimportantforthenovelsposesagreatchallengetotranslatorsontheotherhand.Whilepreviousdialecttranslationstudiesmoreorlesshavesome

3、limitations,Relevance-theoreticalaccountoftranslation,atranslationtheorywhichcoversalltranslationphenomenonunderitsunifiedtheoreticframework,however,offersusabrandnewperspectiveandprobablynewhopeindialecttranslationstudies.RelevanceTheoryisacognitivepragmaticstheo

4、ryproposedbySperberandWilson(1986)onthebasisoftheircriticalanalysisofthetraditionalcommunicationtheorybasedoncodemodeorinferentialmodeandofGrice’sConversationalCooperativePrinciple.Theyredefinethecommunicationmodeoflanguageandarguethatlanguagecommunicationisanoste

5、nsive-inferentialprocess,andeveryactofostensioncarriesaguaranteeofrelevance.AndthecentralclaimofRelevanceTheoryistwoprinciplesofrelevance,namelyFirst(orCognitive)principleofrelevance—“Humanrecognitiontendstobegearedtothemaximisationofrelevance”andSecond(orCommunic

6、ative)principleofrelevance—“everyactofostensivecommunicationcommunicatesapresumptionofitsownoptimalrelevance.”Gutt(2000)introducedRelevanceTheorytotranslationstudiesashebelievesthattranslationisalsoanostensive-inferentialcommunicationundertheguidanceoftheprinciple

7、ofrelevance.Theprincipleofrelevanceheavilyconstrainsthetranslationwithregardtobothwhatitisintendedtoconveyandhowitisexpressed.Andthetranslatorhastogothroughtheostensive-inferentialtwotimes.Inthefirsttime,thetranslatorshouldinferwhatarethecontextassumptionstheorigi
