2、ts’secondlanguage.BilingualeducationwasprevalentintheUnitedStates,Canada,Singaporeandothercountries.However,duetothedifferentnationalconditions,thepurposesofbilingualeducationinvariouscountriesalsovaried.Ingeneral,themodesofbilingualeducationcanbedividedintothreedo
3、minanttypes;theyaretransitionalbilingualeducation,maintenancebilingualeducation,immersionbilingualeducation.FromwhichtheCanadianimmersionbilingualeducationisthemostsuccessful.Thefinalgoalofbilingualeducationistoacquiresubjects’knowledgeandtoimprovetheirlanguageskil
4、ls.Studentsareencouragedtouseasecondlanguagetocommunicatethesubjectcontentswithclassmatesandteachersinordertocontinuouslyimprovetheirlanguageskillsandcriticalthinkingability.Manystudieshaveshownthatbilingualchildrengenerallyhavebettersensitivityinlanguagecomprehens
5、ionandtendtobemoreflexibleinthinkingmodethanmonolingualchildren.Sincetheearly1970s,theUnitedStates,Sweden,Australia,Finland,Spain,Singaporeandothercountrieshavebegunaseriousofbilingualeducationresearchessuittotheirownnationalconditions,onthebasisofCanadiansuccessfu
6、lbilingualeducationresearchachievements,theobjectiveistofullydeveloplearners'languagelearningpotentials,tomaketheirsecondlanguagebeusedasgoodastheirmothertongue,andtobetteradapttotheworld’sdiversifieddevelopment.ThispaperismainlyfocusonthehistoricalbackgroundofCana
