3、thoneanotherinamannerthatpermitsthemtomoverelativetooneanother.Ifoneofthelinksisfixedandthemovementofanyotherlinktoanewpositionwillcauseeachoftheotherlinkstomovetodefinitepredictableposition,thesystemisaconstrainedkinematicchain.Otherwise,thesystemisanunconstrainedkinematicchain.Amecha
4、nismorlinkageisaconstrainedkinematicchain,andisamechanicaldivicethathasthepurposeoftransferringmotionandforcefromasourcetoanoutput.Alinkageconsistsoflinks(orbar),generallyconsideredrigid,whichareconnectedbyjoints,suchaspin(orrevolute)orprismaticjoints,toformopenorclosedchains(orloops).
5、Suchkinematicchains,withatleastonelinkfixed,become(i)mechanismsifatleasttwootherlinksremainmobility,or(ii)stucturesifnomobilityremains.Inotherwords,amechanismpermitsrelativemotionbetweenits“rigidlinks”;astructuredoesnot.Sincelinkagesmakesimplemechanismsandcanbedesignedtoperformcomplext
6、asks,suchasnonlinearmotionandforceransmission,theywillreceivemuchattentioninmechanismstudy.Mechanismsareusedinagreatvarietyofmachinesanddevices.Thesimplestclosed-looplinkageisthefour-barlinkage,whichhasthreemovinglinks(plusonefixedlink)andfourpinjoints.Thelinkthatisconnectedtothepowers
