3、cchainisasystemoflinks,whichareeitherjointedtogetherorareincontactwithoneanotherinamannerthatpermitsthemtomoverelativetooneanother.Ifoneofthelinksisfixedandthemovementofanyotherlinktoanewpositionwillcauseeachoftheotherlinkstomovetodefinitepredictableposi

4、tion,thesystemisaconstrainedkinematicchain.Otherwise,thesystemisanunconstrainedkinematicchain.Amechanismorlinkageisaconstrainedkinematicchain,andisamechanicaldivicethathasthepurposeoftransferringmotionandforcefromasourcetoanoutput.Alinkageconsistsoflinks

5、(orbar),generallyconsideredrigid,whichareconnectedbyjoints,suchaspin(orrevolute)orprismaticjoints,toformopenorclosedchains(orloops).Suchkinematicchains,withatleastonelinkfixed,become(i)mechanismsifatleasttwootherlinksremainmobility,or(ii)stucturesifnomob

6、ilityremains.Inotherwords,amechanismpermitsrelativemotionbetweenits“rigidlinks”;astructuredoesnot.Sincelinkagesmakesimplemechanismsandcanbedesignedtoperformcomplextasks,suchasnonlinearmotionandforceransmission,theywillreceivemuchattentioninmechanismstudy

7、.Mechanismsareusedinagreatvarietyofmachinesanddevices.Thesimplestclosed-looplinkageisthefour-barlinkage,whichhasthreemovinglinks(plusonefixedlink)andfourpinjoints.Thelinkthatisconnectedtothepowersourceorprimemoverandhasonemovingpivotandonegroundpivotisca

8、lledtheinputlink.Theoutputlinkconnectsanothermovingpovittoanothergroundpovit.Thecouplerorfloatinglinkconnectedthetwomovingpivots,thereby“coupling”theinputtotheoutputlink.Thefour-barlinkagehassomespecialconfigurationscreate
