2、ation—topromotestudents’learningautonomy.Learnerautonomyreferstothecapabilitytodeterminethelearningobjectives,selectmethods,monitortheprocedureandevaluatetheresults.Fromtheearly1970s,ourEnglishteachinghasincreasinglyemphasizedtheimportanceofautonomouslearning.Sincethe1980s,learner
3、autonomyhasgainedmomentumintheeducationfield.Todaymoreandmorestudentsarerequiredtobecomeautonomouslearnerstofitthechangepaceofsociety.However,manyteachershavenotadjustedtheirrolesandhavenotlaidstressonpromotingautonomouslearningChapter1Teacher’srole1.1DefinitionofRoleTheterm“role”
4、isafamiliaroneanditsFrenchcircumflexhasbeenwornawaybyfrequentuse.Itcanbedefinedgenerallyasapartthatpeopleplayintheperformanceofsociallife.Arole,putinprecisesociologicaltermsbyBanton,is“asetofnormsandexpectationappliedtoincumbentsofaparticularposition”.Theincumbentsthispaperisconce
5、rnedwitharethosewhotakeuppositionintheEnglishlanguageclass:Englishteachers. Theconcept“role”hasbecomeverypopularinEnglishlanguageteaching(ELT)andisatermincommonusagetodenotethefunctionsthatteachersandlearnersperformduringthecourseoflesson.Inthesocialsettingoftheclassroom,teachers’
