3、nomouslearning.Sincethe1980s,learnerautonomyhasgainedmomentumintheeducationfield.Todaymoreandmorestudentsarerequiredtobecomeautonomouslearnerstofitthechangepaceofsociety.However,manyteachershavenotadjustedtheirrolesandhavenotlaidstressonpromotingautonomouslearnin
4、gChapter1Teacher’srole1.1DefinitionofRoleTheterm“role”isafamiliaroneanditsFrenchcircumflexhasbeenwornawaybyfrequentuse.Itcanbedefinedgenerallyasapartthatpeopleplayintheperformanceofsociallife.Arole,putinprecisesociologicaltermsbyBanton,is“asetofnormsandexpectatio
5、nappliedtoincumbentsofaparticularposition”.TheincumbentsthispaperisconcernedwitharethosewhotakeuppositionintheEnglishlanguageclass:Englishteachers. Theconcept“role”hasbecomeverypopularinEnglishlanguageteaching(ELT)andisatermincommonusagetodenotethefunctionsthatte
