3、50AbstractComplimentsareverycommonbothinEnglishandChinesecontexts,whichareservedtoincreaseorconsolidatethesolidaritybetweenthespeakerandaddressee(Holmes,1988).Thispaperexaminesthedifferencesbetweenwomen’sandmen’scomplimentingandcomplimentrespondingbehaviors,exploringthefunction
4、ofthepositivespeechactsontheonehandaspositivestrategiesandontheotheraspotentiallyfacethreateningorsavingacts.Usinganopen-endedquestionnaireof120Chinesecollegesophomores,thepaperprovidesananalysisconcerningthecomplimentsandcomplimentresponsesbetweenthesamegendersandthedifferentg
5、enders.Firstly,thecomplimentstrategiesandtopicscharacterizingthecomplimentsoffemaleandmaleChinesecollegestudentsaredescribed.Secondly,thecomplimentformulae,aswellasthegenderofcomplimentersandcomplimenteesareexamined.Thirdly,complimentresponsesarecategorizedaccordingtotypesofstr
6、ategies,inadditiontotheresponders’sex.Thefindingsarerelatedtothehypothesisthattherearesignificantdifferencesbetweenwomenandmenintheirrealizationpatternsofcomplimentsandcomplimentresponses,andtothereasonsoftheexistinggenderdifferencesinlanguageusing.Thestatisticalresultsshowthat
7、,generallyspeaking,thereexistsignificantdifferencesbetweenmenandwomenwhentheycomplimentorrespondtocomplimentsfromothers.Forthefirstpart,womentendtousemoreExplicitComplimentsthanmendo,whilementendtoapplymoreImplicitCompliments,orchoosetooptout.Forthesecond,menandwomenalsoshowsli
