2、e.Inthebroadsense,languageisthesymbolicrepresentationofapeople,anditcomprisestheirhistoricalandreligiousbackgroundsaswellastheirwaysoflivingandthinking.Nevertheless,duetodifferentgeographicalsurroundings,dissimilarwaysoflogicalthinking,differentaestheticstandardsanddiff
3、erentsocialsystems,itisawidespreadphenomenonthatthesamewordcanevokedifferentemotionsamongdifferentpeople.ChineseandEnglishcannotbeexceptional,too.Becauseofthat,dueattentionshouldbegiventotheanalysisandcomparisonoftheculturalconnotationofthewords.Itisespeciallyshowninthe
4、expressionofanimaltermsinEnglishandChinese.Animals,havingaclosingconnectionwithpeoplesincetheexistenceofhumanbeing,inflictaprofoundinfluenceonhuman’slife.Thusanimalsareoftenusedtoconveypeople’semotionandgraduallyacquireuniqueconnotationsbeyondtheirliteralmeanings.Butwhe
5、nitcomestomakeacontrastivestudyofanimalterms,itmaybesomewhatanambiguousconclusiontosimplypointtheirdifferencesout.Actually,semanticassociationandpragmaticanalysisofanimaltermsinEnglishandChineseisafarmoreintricatestuff.Andthispaperwillmakeanintensiveresearchonthisproble
6、minahopeofbetterunderstandingtheconnotationsofanimalterms.Justasthetitleofthepaperillustrates,thisarticlemainlyfocusesoncontrastivestudy,thatistosay,therewillbealotofcomparisonsthroughoutthearticle.Throughcomparison,wecanhaveadeeperinsightofsimilaritiesanddifferencesofa
