2、yworkedintothelandscapebothinitssitingandconstruction.Extensiverestorationtookplaceinandaroundtheconstructionsite.OnadryrelativelycoolSeptembermorninginScottsdale,Arizona,agroupofdesignerswoodunderneaththeoverhangingroofof}theLostDogWashTrailhead,charringabouttheseeminglynever-en
3、dingprocessofcreatingaccessareasfortheMcDowellSonoranPreserve.Thepreserveencompassesmorethan16,000acresofland(withanadditional20,000acresofstatelandthathaveyettobeacquiredwithintheproposedboundary)borderingScottsdaletothenorthandeast.Thepreserveprotectsthepeaks,hillsides,andinter
4、iorvalleysoftheMcI3owellMountains.Thoughdevelopmenthascreptintothenearbyvalleysonthewesternedge,withgolfcoursesandneighborhoodsnestledbetweenthepreservedridges,thepreserveprovidesdesertaccesstotheburgeoningpopulationofScottsdale.Itisthataccessthatmakesthepreserveunique.Insteadofc
5、reatingasingleentranceintothepreserve,thecityofScottsdalechosetocreateninetrailheadsdomingitsedges(fourarecomplete),thusgivingeasierandlesscongestedaccesstoagreaternumberofpeople.TheGatewayTrailhead,thefourthintheseriesofnineplannedaccessareas,sitsonawide,flatbajada(adesertalluvi
6、alfandrainingoffMcDowellPeak.Thegatewayisthelargestaccessareashavealsobeencompleted.Theoverallvisionofallnineaccessareas(andtheguidelineswrittentoshapethem)lookstoeachspecific-sitetodefinethe"vocabulary"ofdesign.Thismakestheassemblageworkasacompletevisioneventhougheachsiteistoits
