3、ndrivegear,whichturnsacircularringgear.Theringgearisattachedtoadifferentialhousing,containingasetofsmallergearsthataresplinedtotheinnerendofeachaxleshaft.Asthehousingisrotated,theinternaldifferentialgearsturntheaxleshafts,whicharealsoattachedtothedrivewhee
4、ls.Thedifferentialisanarrangementofgearswithtwofunctions:topermittherearwheelstoturnatdifferentspeedswhencorneringandtodividethepowerflowbetweenbothrearwheels.(1)Theaccompanyingillustrationhasbeenprovidedtohelpunderstandhowthisoccurs.Thedrivepinion,whichis

7、elshaveequaltraction,thepiniongearsdonotrotateonthepinionshaft,sincetheinputforceofthepiniongearsisdividedequallybetweenthetwosidegears.(8)Whenitisnecessarytoturnacorner,thedifferentialgearingbecomeseffectiveandallowstheaxleshaftstorotateatdifferentspeeds.
